Julia Smith showed her debut catwalk collection with Vauxhall Fashion Scout in February 2009. The AW 09/10 collection entitled ‘Mrs White' is entirely produced in England and all of the fabrics are made from organic, recycled or sustainable fabrics. The polyester is 100% recycled and made from plastic bottles, the knits are hand-knitted, the sheepskin is a by-product of the food industry which has been organically tanned and all the prints have been printed by hand.

Joining a cast of eccentric characters that Julia finds herself drawing on for inspiration- 'Mrs White'- alludes to a mysterious woman Julia would often encounter, wandering the streets of South London during her days as an art student.

A collection of treasured pieces. Things that intrigue and excite her. Assembled together to create layers of beauty, history, and drama.

As well as recycled polyester and organic sheepskin the collection is made from bamboo/silk, organic cotton, Scottish wool, organic wool, and various hemp mixes. The vibrant and graphic ‘button' print on bamboo/silk is hand printed here in London.

Julia works with a co-operative in the suburbs of Accra, Ghana, where she commissions a small business to print her linings by hand in the traditional African method of batik printing. Julia's original batik designs are contemporary - adding a diversity of cultures in the final product.

Having completed an MA at the London College of Fashion Julia was immediately snapped up by Alberta Ferretti in Italy. She left Ferretti to go to Ghana to work on a fair-trade design project, with women's co-operative ‘Global Mamas' - the resulting collection was a real hit in UK high street giant Topshop. Since starting the ‘Julia Smith' label, she has been highly acclaimed by fashionistas and journalists alike, and in November 2008 she was awarded the future 100 Young Entrepreneur Award, giving her enhanced recognition as the next generation of young ethical entrepreneurs.
